A Cross-Country & Back Solo Motorcycle Adventure To Raise Awareness for Mental Health

About The Icon Ride

The Icon Ride is a solo cross-country and back motorcycle adventure to raise awareness for mental health. Wayne Sutton, founder of the Icon Project and Co-Founder of Change Catalyst, will start his journey on Monday, October 4th, 2021 visiting scenic destinations throughout the country on his Yamaha Tenere 700. During the Icon Ride, Wayne will share his own mental health challenges along with photos and videos of the adventure. He’ll also meet up with fellow riders and colleagues in the mental health space.

It’s been 47 days since I’ve seen my T7 🏍 as it was left in NC waiting to be shipped across country via @haul_bikes . Yesterday it finally arrived safe and sound. Started right up! Now the cross country adventure aka #iconride is complete that started October 4th. I arrived in NC on October 22nd, flew back on November 1st, and the T7 shipped back on December 17 in San Francisco. That’s an adventure for sure. I would have loved to have rode the bike back but I have a bulged disc that I’m working to heal. Once that’s better… time to plan more adventures! The CBDR @ridebdr is calling along with another shot at the @biltwell 100 desert race in 2022! There’s a special feeling transforming to your true self. Therapy has helped me understand that. For a rider restarting in 2018 in SF I thought cafe racer style was my vibe. I kept modding the Ducati Scrambler 800cc to be better suited for long adventures. Then I graduated scramblers to the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE. I used to say before that bike I never wanted a big adventure bike. The 1200 changed my mind as it was a fun powerful beast. I learned a lot on that bike and gained more skill and confidence on two wheels. As I get ready for my solo cross country trip and back I’ve come to realize that adventure touring is where my mood lies. The Yamaha Tenere 700 (T7) is the leader in the pack as a tested bike many are choosing to ride around the world on. For me the T7 is just what I need! The mods are done and the trip starts Monday! My therapist said use this time to heal and be grateful. I agree and I’m also working on being present in the moment instead of looking back or always dreaming or planning for the next adventure. For now while I wait official MRI results next week long moto adventures are on hold. Still I miss long distance moto adventures. So glad I was able to visit the Grand Canyon in October. While riding out of New Mexico in October I would often search for National Monuments to explore and learn from. The T7 would also pause for the gram. Here I stopped at the El Morro National Monument. While there are few regrets from the #iconride some places like this I could have stayed longer an explored. Also once you leave New Mexico, National Monuments become few and far between the miles. - About El Morro National Monument per the @wikipedia β€œBetween about 1275 to 1350 AD, up to 1,500 people of the Ancestral Puebloan culture lived in the 875-room mesa-top pueblo. The village was situated on the old Zuni-Acoma Trail, an important ancient trade route. Spanish explorers visiting the area in the 16th century referred to the notable promontory as El Morro ("The Headland"); the local Zuni Indians call it A'ts'ina ("Place of writings on the rock"), and early Anglo-Americans referred to it as Inscription Rock” . I’m not sure if there’s a more greater risk than to stand in the middle of cactus 🌡 while it’s 104 degrees in full motorcycle gear and snap a selfie in your first time in Joshua Tree but here we are. πŸ˜‚. I didn’t know Joshua Tree had such cool views. I get it and now want to go back when it’s cooler. The @revit_adventure Sand 4 and cargo pants was in perfect element . Sadly I can’t say I left this spot without being pricked my cactus 🌡. Cactus 2(hand and foot) Wayne, 0. Still, worth it! We share the ups and downs right? Well my down isn’t that bad more of an emotional/mental; with anxiety and stress but all in all I’m ok, safe, privilege and lucky. The past month just feels like a lot worrying, from bike prep for long distance traveling to dealing with some lower back pain. It will all work out one day at a time. The countdown starts tomorrow and I’ll start sharing more prep photos and videos. Today my route was on historic hwy 66. It was fun! some dips, a segment of sharp twisties and trains! Maybe I’m just old or a remember liking trains growing up but when I pass them on the motorcycle, I’m like cool. So it begins! Today I started my cross-country motorcycle adventure to raise awareness for mental health. It’s called the Icon Ride (link in my bio) . I’ve been planning this trip for some time now and there was a time when I didn’t think it was going to happen. Grateful things worked out. Now I just need my body to hold up 🧐😎. The first key destination is the Grand Canyon and from there I figure it out with the midway point being seeing my son and family in North Carolina for a few weeks before I start the journey back West. Also I hope to meetup with fellow riders and some close friends. Along the journey I’ll be sharing the adventures, my mental health experiences and more. After 6 days and 1500 miles my body needed some rest! So did my mind. I’m currently in Albuquerque, NM and while riding in I had to remember that I’m not in a rush, to slow down and listen to my body. Yesterday I rested, did some yoga. Today some work, writing and get ready to be back on the road tomorrow heading East! Even on cross-country adventures it’s good to take time for a gram photoshoot πŸ˜‚. This photo was the same day I did Tail of the Dragon and on Cherohala Skyway which I think is better than the dragon 🧐. Just reflecting on the adventure last month and thinking about time as I’m working on my body healing and waiting for updates for my T7 to be shipped back to SF. Also so glad I wore the @revit_adventure Sand 4 pants and jacket. I stood out and a lot of people thought I was in the military which was a good thing as a solo riding Black man in 2021.
